All good translation blogs need a background

I have a degree in Chemistry from Bradford University. I started ASK as a translation agency with my ex when I was 24, with £50 and a credit card. I jacked in my job working as an analytical chemist for a large American pharmaceutical company on the basis that with 50,000 employees worldwide, it was going to be a while before I was running it.

I had never read a book on business (and still haven’t to this day). In fact the only books I have read over the last 25 years that have helped keep me sane and certainly put the stresses and strains of life into context are the 5 Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy books by the late, great Douglas Adams. He predicted everything - my iPhone with Wikipedia on it would be the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy if only it said “Don’t Panic” on the box!

I believed that all you needed to succeed in business was to be confident, competitive, ambitious, organised, a natural risk taker and hard working. My thoughts on that haven’t changed.

You don’t get a second chance at life so you might as well go for it and make of it what you can. If you are the sort of person who like things given to them, then you are not a natural business leader. I have been going for it since I was 24!

Our little translation agency grew organically and I purchased a few small translation companies along the way.

Today as a leading translation provider we turnover around £2 million with some huge clients. Although a translation company, we have an in-house studio performing typesetting, design and website work. I purchased our Head Office, which used to be a management centre, in 2000 and renovated it, we now rent out the ground floor and use the 2nd and 3rd floors ourselves.

Everyone who sees our translation agency website and translation company literature thinks we are 10 times the size we actually are.

I have always structured the company thinking as if we are already a large translation company.

The translation company challenge!

Today is the first day of the rest of my Life.

I turned 43 today, moderately wealthy and successful and have been running my translation business for 19 years now. It has got me an Aston Martin and 4 acre 500 year old farmhouse, but it is a long way from affording me a luxury yacht, helicopter, golf course and desert island!

So how do I turn a £2 million turnover translation and print business into a £1 billion turnover business?
